Take Me Away

It’s that time of year again. The time when my thoughts start straying to getting away. Anywhere. Everywhere. Any place other than icy frigid Iowa. To be truthful, I was already feeling the need a month ago. And when my husband booked our trip I sighed piteously and whined, “But that’s two months away!”

It’s a month closer now, but still far too far off. Maybe it’s the extra large class size. Maybe it’s the never ending mound of paperwork that takes hours and hours of overtime to shovel through. Whatever…I’m got an attitude. And a rotten cold. The only thing that will fix both is a week away.

Everyone has their own idea of the perfect escape. I have friends who plan a ski vacation every year. And I admit, it always seems glamorous to me. Right up until the time I’ve spent the better part of a day either on my backside or wiping off my backside 🙂  But you have to admit–it *looks* fun.

Or maybe you like communing with nature on your time off.  I have a sister who kayaks on the pristine lakes and rivers of Oregon and Idaho.

At least when they aren’t backpacking in the woods and mountains.

Some of us, however, prefer more sedentary ways to spend our vacations:

Me, I like to pair the relaxation and reading with scenery to die for:

That’s where I’ll be one month from tomorrow.  Sigh.  30 long days from now.  But the thought of spending seven days looking at this scenery will get me through.  It has to 🙂

Which of the above get-aways most appeal to you?  What’s your dream vacation?

I’m with you on the scenery and the relaxation. I could (though we don’t because the other half doesn’t agree) spend all my vacations at state parks for that very reason. I love the lodges–and their food. Have a good time!

What does your other half like to do, Liz? I’m lucky that mine likes beaches, too. If he preferred to spend his time on the golf course we’d be taking separate vacations!

      • Liz Flaherty says:

He does play golf on vacation when there are others with us or nearby. When it’s just the two of us, we can definitely run into discussions–you know, “you want to WHAT?”

    Hmmm . . . snow/skiing . . there could be an avalanche . . . .

Water and canoeing . . wet!

Hiking and being forced to carry your equipment = hard work . . . I’d need another holiday to recover!

Guess it’s lying around like a slug and reading for me 😀

    Have a great time 🙂

My dream vaction is some where warm, where I can sit on the veranda of house on the beach. Where the warm breezes are blowing softly while I sit in a comfy chair or lounge and just read to my hearts content… But then I want places to visit when I feel the need to see other people and where I don’t have to drive too far to see them. Someone to make my meals and do all those little chores for me. aaah to dream…I know such places exsist, I just don’t have the money to acheive my dream right now. So I will have to let my books take me to such places…

    • kylie brant says:

Kathleen, I understand that it is fairly cheap to live in some of these countries and still afford help. But I’d feel so *guilty*…better to go and then pretend the places cease to exist when I go home!

That beach scene looks awesome. Hubby and I have never done anything like that. I’m looking forward to two weeks in Paris in April (no boys allowed; just a girlfriend trip). I wish the days would move faster!

    • kylie brant says:

Ooh, that would be awesome, Michele! My hubby hated Paris and I swore I’d go back someday…without him. Don’t forget to take time out to go to Versailles. Next time I’ll include that, too.

  6. Ah, thank you for the Beach Boys moment, Kylie. Still sweet after all these years.

Two of our favorite getaway spots over the years–places we’ve returned to several times–are Santa Fe and Destin. We became regulars at a lovely old B&B in Destin. Broke our hearts when developers bought that little bit of paradise out and put up a parking lot. Well, more like condos, I guess, but same idea.

  7. Kylie, thanks for the post. It took me down memory lane, because my kids and I used to sing along in the car to “Kokomo”. Now, they’re grown, and no more car singing 😦 . I love hiking deep in the rainforest- say in Hawaii 🙂 and then going home to a 5 star hotel (you did say my “dream” vacation).

Carey, I was pushing for Costa Rica this time because it has all the eco-systems. But while I’m teaching I can only spend a week and if I want to do the volcano and rain forest I’m gonna need longer than 7 days! But some day…

My dream vacation would be going to Fantasy Baseball camp. There you learn and play ball with current and former major league stars. Who says a woman can’t be as good as any man.

  9. kylie brant says:

You go, Rosemary!!! I had a very different ‘dream’ vacation last summer when I went to the Sirchie Academy to Evidence Collection class for writers. I loved it!

  10. Cindy Gerard says:

Ohh. love the Beachboys thanks for the mini vaca!
Have fun on your trip … even if it is a month away. Me, I look forward to idiylic summer days at our cabin on the lake. With a little imagination, I can see myself there now. Come on summer!

I enjoy visting my BFF who resides in Saranac Lake. It’s great to sit and chat over tea. In addition I love to sit on her porch and read,

  13. Such fun to read your post…late commenting, because we were up in Minnesota. Those tropical photos are lovely, but give me mountains and lakes anytime I love Alaska, the Tetons and Nova Scotia. This year I’m looking forward to to a little over three weeks in Ireland and England. It’s our first time there, and I can’t wait!

I am so jealous of your upcoming vacation, Rox!! Take lots of pictures!
