Please welcome C.J. Lyons!

Mirror, Mirror

Last month I was at the Frankfurt Book Fair speaking to several audiences. Which meant being filmed and having my photograph taken. A lot.

(Did I mention? I hate, hate, hate having my picture taken. I’ll bet I’m the only one, right?)

When I saw myself on film, it was weird. I mean—that’s not really how I look, is it? Do I really bob my head like that? And my voice, it’s not really all breathy like a schoolgirl’s?

Is it?

Made me think. There’s the way I see me. The way others see me. And then there’s reality.

And who’s to say which is the real me?

This was an ah-hah moment for the new book I’m writing.

What if everyone sees you as a nice, good-hearted person, but you know different? You know the reason behind your choices, the way you live, is because of a secret buried in your past, a secret you seek redemption for, making the life you live everyday a lie….

And what if this secret was exposed?

Hmmm….gave me a whole new take on both my protagonist and the antagonist. I realized they’re basically the same: living a lie, hiding a secret.

The fact that they share the same secret should really liven things up as well!

What do you think? Do we all live secret lives, hide our real selves?

Or is what you see in the mirror what you get?

Thanks for reading!

Welcome CJ! Congrats on your releases! And I think most of us have secrets or at the minimum pain that we hide. I think things that have happened in the past can definitely motivate some of the choices we make today. Your books are FAB!:)

Welcome, CJ! Sounds like another awesome read! I’m like you. My voice sounds so weird when I hear it recorded. Is that me talking? No, I sound like my mother! Aggh!

  6. I’ve always known you’re secretly a serial killer CJ, but have never really had a problem with it. Nice to know we share a hobby….. 😉

  7. Have often thought about where the “real” person lies, too. I think it’s a very interesting area to delve into! Best of success with the new release!

Thanks, Brett! I guess philosophers would ask if any of us truly know ourselves….but us thriller writers just use that angst to torture our characters (more fun that way!)

  8. christieridgway says:

Oh, I think we all have our secrets! In fiction, we delve into our characters’ deepest selves, but IRL, we always hold something back.

Love the cover of the new release! I’ve been on a romantic suspense/thriller kick (reading Anne Stuart and Wendy Corsi Staub) so off to load up my Kindle!

  9. kylie brant says:

Thanks for stopping by, CJ. Ah yes, the secret life of our characters…where would we be without them???

  10. Welcome, CJ!
Everyone has secrets. I’ve always thought of myself as pretty transparent, and I’m sure I tell people way more than they want to know about myself. Of course, it’s all from one perspective. (I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me!)

I love to explore characters from various perspectives. I love secrets. A story without secrets is like a day without chocolate.
