Best Movie Lines

Like re-reading books, I’ll watch movies over again, too.  It doesn’t matter that I already know what will happen–that’s the draw.  Whether revisiting a thrilling plot or settling in with favorite characters, the point is knowing I’m going to enjoy the show. I find myself anticipating the climatic scene, and being wowed all over again at it’s power.

Last night we re-watched A Few Good Men.  Although I’m not much of a Tom Cruise fan, I adore Jack Nicholson and he’s unparalleled in that courtroom scene where he shouts, “You can’t handle the truth!”  So that got me thinking of other great scenes/lines from movies.  And it was a short trip from their to putting a post together for you all to guess the movie that the following classic lines came from.  Ready?

“I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack.”

“Made it, Ma!  Top of the world!”

“I’ll have what she’s having.”

“You had me at hello.”

“Sometimes I wonder…will God ever forgive us for what we’ve done to each other?  And then I look around and I realize…God left this place a long time ago.”

“Snap out of it!”

“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”

“What we have here is (a) failure to communicate.”

“I love the smell of napalm in the mornings.”

“You talkin’ to me?”

“Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. . .Aren’t you?”

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?”  Just put your lips together and blow.”

“I’d love to kiss you but I just washed my hair.”

“A census taker once tried to test me.  I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”

“If you build it, he will come.”

“There’s no crying in baseball!”

“Here’s Johnny!”

“Is it safe?”

“We rob banks.”

“Stella!  Hey, Stella!”

“They call me Mister Tibbs.”

“You don’t understand!  I coulda had class.  I coulda been a contender.”

“I see dead people.”

Well, how’d you do?  Are any of these lines from your favorite movies?  Or do you have favorites or your own to share with us?

  1. Cindy Gerard says:

OMG, Kylie. these lines are great. I recognize most of them but I could only attach 13 of them to movie titles. I’m HORRIBLE with titles. but what a fun trip that was!!

  2. Kylie Brant says:

Cindy, it was sort of fun to link those oldies to the movie. Although I recognized the line the movie title didn’t ring a bell at all on a couple. But considering I wasn’t born when they came out, no wonder!

  3. Michele says:

Wow, you have a great memory! I can rewatch a movie a year later and it’s totally new to me. Watched Salt the other night and was like ‘I don’t remember this!’. I count that as a good thing. 🙂

  4. Leanne Banks says:

These are great! I could visualize almost all of the scenes for those lines! Cool blog! xo, Leanne

  5. Marcia in OK says:

“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

“Nobody puts Baby in the corner.”

    “E.T. phone home”

“I feel the need, the need for speed.”

    “Soilent green . . . is people.”

“We’re off to see the wizard.”

“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!”

“Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.”

“After all, tomorrow is another day.”

“Of all the gin joints in all the world . . .”

“We’re on a mission from God.”

    “I’ll be back.”

    “Houston, we have a problem.”

I love movies almost as much as I love books!

    • Kylie Brant says:

Marcia, I know some of them!
      1–Gone with the Wind
      2–Dirty Dancing
      3–ET
      4–Top Gun
      5–?
      6-7-8–Wizard of Oz
      9–Gone with the Wind?
      10–Casablanca
      11–?
      12–Arnie…Terminator, maybe?
      13–Apollo 13

  6. I’ve always loved, “You had me at hello.” Because it really says it all. Because the person you love is standing in front of you and that’s all that matters. It’s a powerful moment in a great movie.

  7. Kathleen says:

    I know most of these.. a few I dont’…
    Two of my fav lines.
“You have to be a man first before your a gentleman”…. John Wayne in McClintock
“Darling , if you can paint again, I can walk again”… Debra Kerr in An Affair to Remember.

  8. Kylie Brant says:

Alana, I agree! Renee Z *made* that movie! I’ve loved her ever since!

  9. Kylie Brant says:

Kathleen, I didn’t recognize that John Wayne quote. But McClintock is one of my all time favorite Westerns! And Debra Kerr…I used to watch old movies with my mom in high school. There was such a glamour attached to stars then, even if was an illusion…These days Hollywood needs a bit of that old fashioned mystique!

  10. loisgreiman says:

Many greats there. Off hand I can think of a couple favorite lines: “He’s not a lad. He’s a man.” “You’re okay, Joan Wilder. You were always okay.” Somewhat paraphrased maybe.

Thanks for the fun memories, Kylie.

    • Kylie Brant says:

I got the Joan Wilder one…Romancing the Stone, right? But I’m not familiar with the other quote. I have skads more that have become wedged in my mind like pesky mental splinters, mainly because my kids spout movie lines incessantly.

  11. Keri Ford says:

oh man. I only know a few those. *shame* If I heard them spoken by the actor, then I could probably get more. I tend to remember better that way. am trying to think of a few to tell you, but all I’m getting are cartoons.

    “What’cha doin’?”
“There’s something awfully screwy going on around here.”
    “What’s up, doc?”

    • Kylie Brant says:

Keri, LOL! Cartoons! I love it. And you know the cartoons we used to watch are so much better than today’s! My kids were watching Mickey Mouse on vacation, at the demand of my three year old grandson. One of my sons said, “I liked Mickey Mouse better when he used to have adventures, not when he’s trying to be educational!” 🙂

      • Keri Ford says:

LOL my kid actually loves Looney Tunes. Cartoon Network is playing *new* episodes of them. He’s a huge Bugs fan….unfortunately I’m seeing they’re not exactly “PC” characters and son is picking up their jargon!

  12. Marcia in OK says:

    Kylie – very good!

Soylent Green with Charlton Heston and The Blues Brothers with Akroyd & Belushi.

Lois – I love The Man from Snowy River. If your He’s not a lad line isn’t from that one, it is another with that line.

  13. Kylie Brant says:

Another movie to check out! I’m not familiar with Soylent Green. But Blues Brothers…smacking my forehead. That one I should have known!

  14. Kylie Brant says:

Keri, you’re right–they weren’t PC and were funnier for it! Now I recall that another of your quotes must be from my favorite–Tweetybird!

  15. Julie Hurwitz says:

I can’t believe there aren’t any Princess Bride quotes. There are so many.
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
“You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is: “Never get involved in a land war in Asia.” But, only slightly less well known is this: “Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!”
    “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife.”
    “Have fun stormin’ the castle.”
“There is shortage of perfect breasts in the world. ‘Twould be a pity to damage yours.”
“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

  16. kylie brant says:

Julie, the only one I recognized was the last one–Princess Bride! A classic! I need to rewatch that one!

    • Julie Hurwitz says:

Kylie, they were all from Princess Bride. I adore that movie.

There are also a couple of good ones from An American President. My favorite is “My name is Andrew Shepherd. And I am the president!”

      • Kylie Brant says:

Julie, my favorite from An American President came from Martin Sheen, when Michael Douglas asked something about Annette Benning liking him. “I don’t know, but I could pass her a note in study hall and ask her.” Something along those lines 🙂 It just made Douglas’s character seem so human.

    • Julie Hurwitz says:

I love the pass her a note in study hall line. 🙂

I also like when he’s explaining the slow-down method and she appears from the closet, wearing just his shirt. And he says, “Perhaps I didn’t explain the fundamentals of the slow-down plan.” And she purrs, “You explained it great.”

  17. I know most of them. Truly. Hubby and I are big on movie lines. One of his favorites to me is “You’re way over your head, Pea.” One of mine: “You must endeavor to perservere.”

  18. bkrahn007/Betina says:

I LOVE these! I knew many of them, but had to be reminded where they came from. What a cool blog!

One of my favorite movies of all times is the original “Lake Placid”. . . where the sheriff (played by the fabulous Brendon Gleeson) is a sardonic, stoic character who gets ruffled by an over-the-top crocodile-chasing playboy (played by Oliver Platt). Lines like: “Of course you wouldn’t know that. . . they hide information like that in BOOKS.” And “Because the longer you live, the more sex you get to have with your SISTER!” Both lines thrown at the sheriff by playboy Platt with seething condescension and indignity. The timing in the movie is pitch perfect.

And another line (pair of lines, actually) delivered by Tom Ewell in some unlikely western. He played a rummy town doctor who was reading a tattered medical journal that was only a few years old. “It says here,” he deadpans, “you have to wash your hands. Who can keep up?”

  19. Kylie Brant says:

For anyone wondering about the answers, I’ve listed them below:

“I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack.” (The Hangover)
“Made it, Ma! Top of the world!” (James Cagney, White Heat)
“I’ll have what she’s having.” (woman in diner, When Harry Met Sally)
“You had me at hello.” (Renee Zellwiger Jerry McGuire)
“Sometimes I wonder…(Leonardo di Caprio, Blood Diamond)
“Snap out of it!” (Cher, Moonstruck)
“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” (Peter Finch, Network)
“What we have here is a failure to communicate.” (Strother Martin, Cool Hand Luke)
“I love the smell of napalm in the mornings.” (Robert Duvall, Apocalypse Now)
“You talkin’ to me?” (Robert Duvall, Taxi Driver)
“Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you?” (Dustin Hoffman, The Graduate)
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” (Roy Schneider, Jaws)
“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?” Just put your lips together and blow.” (Lauren Bacall, To Have and Have Not)
“I’d love to kiss you but I just washed my hair.” (Bette Davis, The Cabin in the Cotton)
“A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” (Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs)
“If you build it, he will come.” (Ray Liotta, Field of Dreams)
“There’s no crying in baseball!” (Tom Hanks, A League of Their Own)
“Here’s Johnny!” (Jack Nicholson, The Shining)
“Is it safe?” (Lawrence Oliver, Marathon Man) I think I saw it in the 70s and it scared the bejeesus out of me!
“We rob banks.” (Warren Beatty, Bonnie and Clyde)
“Stella! Hey, Stella!” (Marlon Brando, A Streetcar Named Desire)
“They call me Mister Tibbs.” (Sidney Potier, In the Heat of the Night)
“You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender.” (Marlon Brando, On the Waterfront)

  20. “I have a bad feeling about this.” Constantly quoted at my house. (It’s from Star Wars, one of the first three.)

  21. Kylie Brant says:

Nancy, was it Hans Solo? Loved Harrison Ford in the that role! The classic anti-hero…

  22. Joan Harding says:

Very fun Blog! I also find myself remembering lines from Songs in the Movies-“Shall two knights never tilt for me, and let their blood be spilt (spilled) for me. Oh, where are a maidens simple joys?” Guenevere -Camelot.

  23. Kristan says:

I think my favorite movie line is “I am just one stomach flu away from my goal weight.” Gets me every time!

  24. Helen Brenna says:

I love this post. It’s so fun to recall the lines from movies. I was thinking the same thing Julie was thinking as I read them, “What, no Princess Bride?” That’s one of my all time favs. Julie, you missed one of the best – “Inconceivable!” LOL

“May the force be with you.”
    “I’ll be back.”
    “Yeah, baby!”
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
“You make me want to be a better man.”
“I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

    There’s a few!

    • Julie Hurwitz says:

True, Helen. Although I did have the follow up line to “Inconceivable.”
      Let’s see, for yours…
      1) Star Wars
      2) Terminator
      3) not sure
      4) Love Story
      5) As Good As It Gets
      6) Was this Notting Hill?

  25. These are great! I recognized some, but not all. ::shame:: I couldn’t remember the exact wording of a fave of mine, so I admit I looked it up to get it right:

“You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”

Hawkeye to Cora, The Last of the Mohicans

    • Kylie Brant says:

Christie, I hadn’t recalled that one but it’s romantic, too 🙂

Another favorite of mine is, ahem, obscenity laced. But who could forget Bruce Willis in Die Hard 1–“Yippee kai-ai, .” It loses something in the censorship!

  26. Kylie Brant says:

Helen, how could I have forgotten Jack Nicholson’s “You make me want to be a better man.” Hubba hubba. That guy still has it, regardless of age!

  27. Jan Snyder says:

Oh what a WONDERFUL post 🙂 Perfect ending to a Thursday evening–like watching mini-movies in my mind! Most of my favorites have been mentioned, but there are a few yet to go:
    Bring out your dead!
Good morning, Lucy. (just the best romantic movie of all times!)
A captain with seven children. . .what’s so awe-some about that?
…your eyes, in your voice, in the way you stand there, in the way you walk. You’re lit from within, Tracy. You’ve got fires banked down in you, hearth-fires and holocausts.
I’m the son of a sea cook!
(can you tell I’m a sucker for Cary?)

Great post–thanks again, Kylie! Jan Snyder
